Nintendo has announced that the New Super Mario Bros U DLC game, New Super Luigi U will be released on the eshop on June 20th. However, in the spirit of the Year of Luigi, Nintendo has decided to release a stand alone copy of the game at retail. That version will be released on August 25th and will cost $10 more.If you already own NSMBU, you can get the DLC from the eshop for $20. If you are like me and prefer physical copies of your games (or you don’t already own NSMBU), you can buy the retail release for $30 two months later. I am thrilled that Nintendo decided to release this at retail, but not sure I want to fork over $30 for DLC (not too sure I want to pay $20 for it either). Hopefully, the retail release will get some launch discounts or sweet preorder bonuses. If not, I may wait for a price drop at retail. What about you?

Originally released in 1999, this is the 6th installment in the King of Fighters series. This time, there is a new protagonist with an all-new story. Instead of the previous 3-member team format, now teams have 4 members, where 3 members actually fight and 1 member is designated as a “Striker”. As in previous versions, you can unleash Super Special Moves when the gauges fill up. However, a new feature has been introduced whereby using 3 power stocks allows you to execute either Counter Mode, which increases offensive strength, or Armor Mode, which increases defensive strength. Tactics that apply to each situation have also been powered up. King of Fighters 99 boasts 32 playable characters. Do you think you have what it takes to reach the top?

Contra. Metal Slug. These are the games that come to mind when you want to play a run and gun shooter. Well, I am going to add another name to that list. Alien Chaos 3D. Yeah, I never heard of it either until I saw it on the shelf of my local game store. But, with a price of $20 (and a $10 coupon), I will take a chance on a good looking game…and this one does look good.

The story here is that you and your mother run a cleaning business, but, when Mama is kidnapped by aliens, Really Shooter (that’s actually your character’s name) must lock and load to rescue her. Hey, you telling me you played Contra for the story? I didn’t either. The draw here is the sweet run and gun game play. Very similar to Contra and Metal Slug, but there’s other elements here at work with Alien Chaos 3D. Since you are a janitor, your job is to clean. Every bullet you shoot actually creates a shell on the ground. If you push those shells into containers, you will get upgrades to your gun. Machine gun, spread shot, and even plasma rifles are available this way. Every enemy you blow up creates smoke stains on the walls. If you pause in front of one, you will wipe it clean. Doing this builds up your super shot, which is a bomb that kills everything in a small circle around you. Unlike Contra and Metal Slug, developer Ludosity has given you a health bar instead of killing you after taking one hit. Finishing the level will net you bonus points based in how much health is left. You can earn silver or gold medals based on how many points you earn each level. The idea is to keep retrying levels to get the maximum score. As far as I know, there are no online leader boards or anything, but there is a Street Pass feature that may let others challenge your hi scores.

The biggest problem with Alien Chaos 3D has to be the price. This game would be awesome if it was a $5-10 eShop title, but $20 for the retail version? That will turn off many people. All in all, the game has 25 levels, split over 5 “episodes”. Currently, I am on level 23 and have been playing the game just over an hour. Replay value is pretty much nonexistent unless I find a bunch of people to street pass with and want to try and beat their scores. If you love Contra and Metal Slug type shooters, you won’t be disappointed. Just try to find a coupon or something to knock the price down a little. I am glad I got it for $10 and not $20.

April’s showers are giving way to May’s flowers. From now till the end of the year, it seems that Nintendo has a big game or two for each month. What’s on tap for May 2013? Check out the goods inside!

The 3DS eShop gets things started with Mario and Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move. The eShop exclusive is available on May 9th. As I wrote earlier, the main game play mode here feels like a Railroad Constructor clone from iOS platforms. Videos have confirmed that for me, but Nintendo has added other stuff to make it stand apart. One example of this is that the Minis can use hammers to clear enemies. Other modes of play are included such as a slingshot game where you fling the Minis at a Rubix Cube like object, trying to break off the pieces. I had written that the price would be a major factor and that I can’t see people buying it for more than $15. Good news on that, as Nintendo has priced this game at $10. Still not sure if I will pull the trigger or not, but I thoroughly enjoyed Railroad Constructor, so the game is on my radar.

The big retail release for 3DS is Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D on May 24th. This is a port of the 2010 Wii game, Donkey Kong Country Returns. Nintendo has added exclusive levels to the 3DS version, new difficulty settings, and of course, 3D visuals. I have the Wii version, but never seem to get into it that much. I don’t even think I made it halfway through the game. Having the game on the go would be great and I probably will get this at some point. Not sure it will be this month, though. The game does have some good preorder deals to entice gamers.

As for the Wii U, the 3DS game, Resident Evil: Revelations is scheduled to hit on May 21st, but I have not heard for sure if that is still the case. I have not played the 3DS version, so I can’t really comment on it. I do know that it was a well received game. Will that carry over to the Wii U? Who knows, but hopefully, Capcom added something new to the mix. I’m sure the newly launched Virtual Console will be getting some new games in May too, but nothing definite has been announced by Nintendo. Going by the slow releases on Wii and the 3DS Virtual Consoles, the Wii U owners could be in for a slow wait for their favorite games. One that we know will release in May is the classic Super Metroid for SNES. This game is a part of the Famicom 30th Anniversary games, so it will be available for $.30 cents from May 15th through June 13th. That is a sure fire sell in my book. Out of all the 30th Anniversary games, Super Metroid is the best, in my opinion. I’m sure many of you feel the same.

So, how about it? Anything for you on Nintendo devices for the month of May? Hopefully, June will be even more jam packed with E3 going on. Even if Nintendo doesn’t have a big conference show, they will be there with new game announcements, I’m sure. Check back next month as we run down the major releases from Nintendo in June!
