Epic Mickey 3DS Demo impressions – Game released on November 18th

Epic Mickey Power of Illusion

The Wii U is not the only new release for this Sunday.  Mickey Mouse returns to platform gaming with the 3DS title, Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion.  This is the spiritual successor to the Sega Genesis game, Castle of Illusion, only now, the Castle has been banished to the depths of Wasteland.  Its up to Mickey to rescue all his pals….or is it?  Nothing is as it seems with the power of illusion.

This game has been on my radar since it was announced, and after playing the demo on the Nintendo eShop, I can safely say that it will be in my collection sooner rather than later.  The game plays like a Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis game from the early 90s.  2D pixels, run and jump gameplay, and enough cameos to make you want to search every nook and cranny of each level.  Sounds like my kind of game.

The gameplay has you jumping and ‘butt-stomping’ enemies like the Duck Tales games in the NES.  I wish I could talk about the Castle of Illusion similarities, but I’ve never played the Genesis game that inspired this.  Other Disney characters are ‘lost’ within levels for you to rescue and after they are saved, each character returns to the Fortress, where you can choose to interact with them for additional power ups or abilities.  I really did not delve into that much, as I wanted to keep playing the level to get a feel for the gameplay.  The only hiccups could come from the sketch or erase sections that have you ‘painting’ in platforms or removing obstacles with your paint thinner.  The few times I had to do this makes me think it will get annoying and repetitive.  Hopefully not, but we shall see.  At any rate, I plan on getting this for my 3DS collection ASAP.

What about you?  Have you played the demo?  Planning on getting the game?  Let us know in the comments below!  Make no mistake, the hoopla surrounding the Wii U launch will steal the headlines come Sunday, but don’t let this game get lost in the shuffle.   Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion will be available in retail stores and digitally through the Nintendo eShop on day 1!
